Getting Red-dy For The Party: A Guide On The Best Red Lipsticks Of All Time

Growing up, I’ve always seen my mom wear red lipstick. There’s never a moment where my mom ditched her tubes of Chanel and Cle de Peau. As a gloss girl throughout my childhood, I never bothered to wear lipstick until I went to NYC in the summer of 2011. In NYC, I was always distracted by the beauty aisle at Duane Reade, Space NK and Sephora. While I was hesitant to try any other shade outside of pink and nude, the biggest life-changing moment happened when I stumbled across a row of Lime Crime lipsticks at Space NK.

Say what you want about the most controversial indie beauty brand, but Lime Crime’s campy pinky purple tube contained the brightest neon red. Dubbed “Retrofuturist”, this blue-based red felt so right. The moment I swatched it on the back of my hand, my eyes immediately fell in love. As I tried it on at my sister’s studio apartment, I knew that red lipstick is destined to stay inside my makeup bag.

Now that I’m an avid lipstick collector, there is never a day when I am never without rouge (save for some gloss or lip balm). If this is your first time wearing red, don’t be shy.

  1. Dior’s Rouge Dior in 999

The first time I heard of this shade was when I saw Emily Dougherty, a beauty editor, smash up a bullet on her IG. Seeing a lipstick crush to pieces and have it blended into a new shade was just a beautiful sight. Upon seeing it frequently, it made me want to buy a tube at the airport in Paris. Now that it’s been a year since I bought it, it’s still so fresh in the tube! Among all the hours that I’ve worn it daily, this shade barely fades unless I eat a meal. As the universal true red, it looks phenomenal with ANY style of eye makeup.

FYI, if you don’t like creamy finishes, there’s also a matte version of 999 as well. πŸ˜‰

2. Jeffree Star’s Velour Liquid Lipstick in Anna Nicole

Named after Anna Nicole Smith, this bold orange-y red has always been my cup of tea since I laid eyes on it. Since it stays on so well and it’s transfer-free, this is honestly THE best liquid lipstick I’ve ever tried! I never felt that it dried out my lips as it’s so comfy, you know? If you are to take a photo, this shade flatters ANY filter you use on IG. Seriously, it’s the closest dupe to my beloved tube of Miley x MAC’s Viva Glam II!

3. Bite Beauty Lip Crayon in Fraise

Creamy, soft and buildable, this rich strawberry red has always been a top fave. What I love about Bite is that it doesn’t have this fake fruity smell and it’s also vegan-friendly since it uses orange peel wax to make this buttery texture.

4. Charlotte Tilbury’s Matte Revolution in Walk of Shame

As a deep brown-based berry red, Walk of Shame happens to be a top favorite. Even though matte finishes have a risk of drying out my lips, I like how this powdery finish doesn’t dry me out.

5. RosΓ© All Day x Maria Rahajeng’s Lip + Cheek in Maria

If you like wine, then you’ll get drunk in love with this shade. I have to admit that while it tends to stain, you can actually play around with how you wanna wear it. You can either wear it as a light lip stain or heavy opaque lipstick. It’s one of my top faves from RosΓ© as it’s not like any other shade I see from Indo beauty brands.

6. Urban Decay’s Vice Lipstick in Love Drunk

As a nice metallic red, this one is for the books. I wore it almost EVERYDAY last year to the point where it got down to the bottom of the tube in months. Since it’s blue-based, I like how this one REALLY flatters tanned complexions like mine! But in all honesty, this is a universal red that will truly look phenomenal on everyone.

7. Shiseido’s VisionAiry Gel Lipstick in Ginza Red

Alright, I had to admit that I bought it simply because I couldn’t resist another red lipstick into my collection. Like the red lacquerware bowls you see in Japanese restaurants, this warm red lights up my face. Due to its gel formula, it feels ridiculously lightweight to the point where you forget that you have lipstick on.

8. Revlon’s Super Lustrous Lipstick in Fire and Ice

As THE neutral red, fire and ice balances warm and cool tones. What I like most about this red is that it evokes this classic vintage vibe as it’s been around for 60+ years! Before I moved to Singapore, I could only get this shade when I was living in the US. Now that it’s here islandwide, I’m glad that I can FINALLY get my hands on it! With a super creamy formula that doesn’t feel drying, this is one of the best drugstore lipsticks that I REALLY swear by. (Shame on me that I don’t wear it as often as I’m scared of not being able to find it again, but I can always pray that the brand will send me an ENTIRE box of tubes like Kim K!)

HONORARY MENTION: Jouer’s High Pigment Lip Gloss in Shibuya

Although I mentioned that this post is all about lipstick, I feel that I can’t ignore the significance of lip gloss. As much as I love lip gloss, I am OBSESSING over the fact that opaque shades exist! In my case, Jouer’s Shibuya is the best bold red gloss that anyone can ask for as it’s loud, bright and completely in your face. While gloss obviously can’t last a meal, this one can stay on my lips without having me frequently reapply it like a madman. If you need to stay out in the sun or plan to be up all night, this gloss is your best bet.

Full-face makeup included, too. ;)
